Kids’ Colds 101: Everything Parents Need to Know About Children’s Colds

‘Tis the season for…sniffles, sneezing, and coughing? Parents, welcome to winter, when this time of year can mean pesky symptoms for your kiddos. More than 200 types of viruses, known as rhinoviruses, can cause colds, and kids can come down with a cold four or more times a year. Little bees can tend to catch colds more often because they haven’t yet built an immunity to common cold viruses. Not to worry! We’ve got your guide to everything you need to know about colds.

What Are the Symptoms of a Cold in Kids?

Colds are caused by viral infections, and they tend to hit kids harder due to their developing immune systems. This is especially true in the winter, when contaminated droplets travel more easily in dry air. When people are inside more often when it’s cold out, it’s easier for germs to spread. Some symptoms and signs of a cold include:

  • Nasal congestion

  • Runny nose

  • Coughing

  • Sneezing

  • Mild fever

Less common cold symptoms in children include loss of appetite, mild body aches, and irritability. It’s crucial to encourage good hygiene and preventative habits since cold viruses spread through hand-to-hand combat or droplets from coughing and sneezing.

How Long Does a Cold Last in Kids?

A cold can typically last for a week, but may last up to two. Your kids are most contagious for the first 2-3 days when symptoms are at their peak, like a sore throat, runny nose, or cough. Read on to help your little bee feel better and ease their symptoms.

How Can I Help My Child Feel Better?

Unfortunately, colds just have to run their course, but these home remedies tips can help offer relief for uncomfortable symptoms:

Cold Remedies for Kids

  • Help clear nasal pathways by running a hot shower and have your child breathe in the warm, moist air

  • Use a cold mist humidifier and change the water daily to keep bacteria at bay

  • A teaspoon of honey for kids 1 year and up can help soothe their throats and ease their coughing

When to Call the Pediatrician

If your little bee experiences a high fever, has trouble breathing, shows signs of dehydration or seems lethargic, contact your pediatrician right away.

How Can I Prevent the Spread of Germs?

You can help keep germs from spreading and teach your children the following habits to encourage good hygiene:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water

  • Use hand sanitizer

  • Practice cough etiquette and cover mouths when sneezing or coughing (use a tissue or elbow)

  • Avoid close contact with someone who’s sick

  • Frequently disinfect high-touch surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and electronics

Can I Prevent My Child From Getting a Cold?

You can help support your little bee’s immune system with habits like:

A balanced diet

Ensure they eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to fuel their body.

Regular exercise

Active kids are less likely to succumb to colds.

Sleep

Make sure your kids get enough rest; studies show that lack of sleep can lead to sickness after exposure. It’s essential for supporting their immune system, especially if they’re recovering.
